Project Laiton
Restaurant & Bio Store Rooted in Sustainable Farming
For a Taiwanese restaurateur, we transformed a small two-storey building into a hybrid space: a bio store and café on the ground floor, opening directly onto the street for both indoor and outdoor dining, and a full-day restaurant above. The project sought to embody the values of sustainable farming, not only through the food concept but also in its architectural and interior design.
The façade was reimagined with large movable metal panels, cut with intricate patterns inspired by local textile motifs. These panels create a dynamic play of light and shadow, continuously shifting throughout the day and animating both the street and the interior spaces.
Inside, the design prioritised local and sustainable materials, from the choice of flooring to the fabrics used in the custom-designed seating. The upper-level restaurant houses its kitchen within a freestanding mini-structure, intentionally reminiscent of street food shacks—a subtle nod to the informality and conviviality of everyday dining traditions.
Throughout the day, the restaurant evolves in mood as sunlight filters through the patterned façade, complemented by carefully layered internal lighting in the evening.
